Waqf in Mauritius: History, Legislation and Current Challenges
This presentation explores the history and development of Waqf in Mauritius, from the challenges surrounding mosque ownership and administration before dedicated legislation to the enactment of the Waqf Act in 1941. It highlights the role of the Muslim community in advocating for Waqf legislation, the establishment of the Board of Waqf Commissioners, and the evolution of Waqf administration in Mauritius.
The presentation also examines current challenges, including public awareness, transparency, understanding of Waqf, management of Waqf properties, and the promotion of Waqf as a source of charitable and community financing. According to figures from April 2026, Mauritius has 539 registered Waqfs, covering mosques, charitable causes and family Waqfs.
